Additional information

The World Wildlife Fund's 25th anniversary in 1986 prompted a wave of commemorative issues from nations whose territories harbored genuinely threatened fauna. Fiji's contribution spotlighted Ogmodon vitianus, the bolo snake — a small fossorial species endemic to Viti Levu and one of the rarest snakes on earth, with population estimates that have never exceeded a few hundred individuals. It belongs to a monotypic genus, meaning no close living relatives exist anywhere.

The WWF itself co-authorized the series, making these among the few commemoratives where the conservation body had direct programmatic involvement rather than merely lending its name.
