Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is dominated by a bold high-relief rendering of a U.S. Navy dive bomber — depicted from a rear overhead perspective in steep diving attitude — occupying the central field, with the aircraft's wings bearing U.S. national insignia roundels clearly visible. Beyond the aircraft, the textured ocean surface is rendered in fine detail, with a Japanese warship visible in the upper middle distance amid a smoky, turbulent horizon. The legend 'BATTLE OF MIDWAY' arcs along the upper periphery in large incuse letters, and the Roman numeral date 'MMXXIV' appears in the lower exergue.

Aanvullende informatie

The Battle of Midway, fought June 4–7, 1942, is widely regarded as the decisive turning point in the Pacific War — the moment Japan's naval air superiority was broken permanently. Four Japanese fleet carriers were sunk in a single engagement, a loss from which the Imperial Japanese Navy never recovered. What made Midway unusual was that American codebreakers at Station HYPO had cracked enough of the Japanese naval cipher JN-25 to anticipate the attack, allowing Admiral Nimitz to position his outnumbered force with foreknowledge the Japanese never suspected.

Cook Islands has issued commemorative gold in this weight class regularly since the 1990s, with the series frequently licensed through external minting arrangements rather than struck domestically.
