Liberia has operated as a prolific bullion and commemorative issuer since the 1990s, licensing its monetary authority to produce collector pieces with no meaningful domestic circulation — this coin is firmly in that category. The Amenhotep IV and Nefertiti pairing references the Amarna Period of Egyptian history, roughly 1353–1336 BC, during which the pharaoh abandoned the traditional polytheistic pantheon in favor of Aten worship, relocating the capital to Akhetaten. Whether that history motivated this issue or simply provided attractive subject matter for a foreign-licensed mint is a question the production record does not flatter.
