Issued to mark forty years since the Istiqlal Declaration of November 1944 and France's formal recognition of Moroccan independence in March 1956, this coin was struck during a period when Hassan II was actively using commemorative silver to project dynastic continuity and consolidate the monarchy's symbolic role in post-colonial national identity. The 200 Dirham denomination was introduced specifically for collector-oriented commemoratives — it had no circulation equivalent in the regular series.
