Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this coin appeared during a period of genuine political tension in Morocco — Hassan II's reign had been defined in part by the so-called "Years of Lead," a decades-long campaign of state repression, enforced disappearances, and detention without trial. The timing was not lost on observers. Hassan II died the following year, and his son Mohammed VI moved quickly to establish the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, which formally acknowledged abuses committed under the father's government.
