Additional information

Sharjah's 1970 football World Cup issue was part of a broader pattern of small Gulf sheikhdoms producing commemorative coinage primarily for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. Sharjah, then still a British Protectorate under the Exclusive Agreement, had virtually no established monetary infrastructure of its own — the UAE would not form until 1971. These pieces were effectively licensed revenue generators aimed at philatelic and numismatic agencies in Europe and North America, a practice that drew criticism from the International Numismatic Commission at the time.
