By 1983, Yugoslavia's federal monetary system was visibly straining under accelerating inflation — the dinar had been losing purchasing power steadily since the late 1970s, and the 200-dinar denomination, once a significant face value, was already being eroded into an everyday transaction note. The Zavod za Izradu Novčanica in Belgrade had by this point established itself as a technically competent in-house printer, handling the full domestic output without foreign contract printers.
Watermark security was the sole anti-counterfeiting measure on this issue — no security thread, no fluorescent inks. Within a few years, hyperinflation would render the entire series obsolete, replaced by redenominated issues that wiped zeros rather than addressed root causes.
