The Gambia has a long and somewhat notorious history of issuing gold coins featuring foreign statesmen with no meaningful connection to the country — a revenue model aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than any domestic monetary function. Kissinger's inclusion in this series almost certainly postdates the 2013 constitutional declaration of Gambia as an Islamic Republic under Yahya Jammeh, a period when the central bank increasingly licensed its name to foreign minting operations.
