Vietnam's 1987 banknote series was issued during the final, chaotic years of the centrally planned economy, just months before the Đổi Mới reforms fundamentally restructured how money functioned in the country. Inflation was running at several hundred percent annually by this point — a 200 Đồng note that could buy a modest meal in early 1987 was nearly worthless by year's end.
The series was quickly superseded and large quantities were withdrawn, though surviving circulated examples often show heavy soiling consistent with the period's poor paper quality and high-velocity day-to-day use.
