The 200 cruzeiros denomination was introduced as Brazil's inflation began accelerating sharply into the early 1980s — a note that would have seemed a large denomination at issue became increasingly inadequate within just a few years. By 1984, the cruzeiro itself was being phased out, replaced by the cruzado in 1986 as part of the Cruzado Plan's failed attempt to break the inflationary cycle.
Three signature combinations across the print run reflect real ministerial turnover: Langoni resigned as Banco Central president in 1983 under pressure following disagreements with the IMF over renegotiation of Brazil's foreign debt, which explains the break between series A2996 and A2997. Pastore succeeded him. Replacement notes are identified by a prefix asterisk on the serial number — a Casa da Moeda convention consistent across this period's Brazilian issues.
