Brazil's mid-1980s coinage existed in a state of constant obsolescence. Inflation was running above 200% annually by 1985, and the cruzeiro denomination structure was collapsing so rapidly that the 200-cruzeiro coin — worth a meaningful sum just years earlier — had become effectively valueless before its own mintage run concluded. The Cruzado reform of February 1986 replaced the cruzeiro at a rate of 1,000:1, rendering this issue obsolete within months of its first striking.
