200 Bolívares Francisco de Miranda, Silver

Francisco de Miranda spent decades lobbying European powers and the United States to back Venezuelan independence before Bolívar's campaigns made it irrelevant — or rather, made Miranda himself irrelevant. He surrendered the First Venezuelan Republic to the Spanish in 1812, was handed over to royalist forces by his own compatriots including Bolívar, and died in a Cádiz prison in 1816, never seeing the independence he had spent his life pursuing.

Venezuela has issued Miranda commemoratives intermittently since the 1970s. This 2010 piece falls within a broader BCV bullion and commemorative program tied to Bicentennial independence anniversaries running from 2010 through 2011.
