Francisco de Miranda spent years lobbying European powers and the United States to support Venezuelan independence, ultimately failing to secure meaningful backing before his 1806 filibustering expedition collapsed almost immediately after landing. Venezuela honored him on gold coinage long before the 2010 issue, but the Chávez-era redenomination of 2008 — which converted old bolívares at 1,000 to 1 into the new bolívar fuerte — created the need for a fresh series of official bullion and commemorative pieces denominated in the reformed currency.
