The piedfort format — double-thickness blanks struck for collectors — was already a well-established European practice by the time Thailand adopted it for select commemorative issues in the 1990s. This piece was issued in conjunction with WWF fundraising efforts, with a portion of proceeds directed toward elephant conservation programs at a moment when Thailand's wild elephant population had declined from an estimated 100,000 animals a century earlier to fewer than 5,000.
