Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the World Wildlife Fund's panda program and Thailand's long partnership with the organization, this coin was part of a coordinated multinational release in which participating countries each selected a nationally significant endangered species. Thailand's choice of the Asian elephant was straightforward — the animal had been central to Thai labor, warfare, and royal ceremony for centuries, and its population had collapsed from an estimated 100,000 animals at the century's start to fewer than 5,000 wild individuals by the time of striking.
The WWF coin program consistently produced issues with limited secondary market liquidity despite strong initial demand — collector fatigue from the sheer volume of participating nations kept premiums modest.
