Issued to mark the 26th anniversary of the WWF's founding, this coin was part of a coordinated multinational series in which participating countries each highlighted an endangered local species. Thailand's selection reflected genuine conservation pressure at the time — deforestation and poaching had pushed several native species to critical status by the mid-1980s. The Royal Thai Mint produced commemorative silver in limited numbers for international collector markets rather than domestic circulation.
