Issued to mark both the turn of the millennium and the Year of the Dragon in the Thai lunar calendar, this is one of the largest silver pieces in Thailand's modern commemorative program — a kilo-adjacent format borrowed from the prestige bullion conventions popularized by the Perth and Royal Canadian mints in the 1990s. Rama IX, Bhumibol Adulyadej, reigned for 70 years, and by 2000 his image on Thai coinage had become one of the most reproduced royal portraits in numismatic history.
The Dragon year alignment with Y2K gave the Thai government a dual hook for foreign sales, and distribution was heavily weighted toward collector markets in East and Southeast Asia.
