Dian Fossey was murdered at her Karisoke Research Center in December 1985 — a killing never conclusively solved, though her outspoken campaign against poaching had made her numerous enemies among local traffickers and, some argued, within Rwanda's own bureaucratic apparatus. Rwanda's decision to place her on a gold coin more than two decades later reflects how thoroughly her international reputation had been rehabilitated as an asset to conservation tourism, particularly after the 1988 film accelerated gorilla-related interest in the Virunga region.
