| Reverse description | A forward-facing portrait of primatologist Dian Fossey dominates the field, depicted cradling a juvenile mountain gorilla in her arms. A stylized mountain range forms the background, evoking the Virunga volcanic landscape of Rwanda where Fossey conducted her renowned research. The subject's name DIAN FOSSEY arcs along the upper legend, with the commemorative inscription 75th BIRTHDAY and the date 2007 completing the peripheral legend. |

| Additional information |
Dian Fossey was murdered at her Karisoke Research Center in December 1985 — a killing never conclusively solved, though her outspoken campaign against poaching had made her numerous enemies among local traffickers and, some argued, within Rwanda's own bureaucratic apparatus. Rwanda's decision to place her on a gold coin more than two decades later reflects how thoroughly her international reputation had been rehabilitated as an asset to conservation tourism, particularly after the 1988 film accelerated gorilla-related interest in the Virunga region.
