Beschrijving keerzijde A finely detailed equestrian portrait of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish-American military commander and national hero, is rendered in high relief at the center of the field. Kościuszko is depicted in full military uniform and characteristic Kraków-style konfederatka cap, seated astride a prancing horse moving to the left. The composition captures the dynamism and dignity of the subject in a style reminiscent of classical commemorative portraiture. The name TADEUSZ KOŚCIUSZKO is inscribed in bold capital letters along the upper arc of the coin, with the highly polished proof field serving as a foil to the frosted relief of the equestrian figure.

Aanvullende informatie

This piece belongs to a wave of large-format silver issues NBP produced in the final months of communist rule and the chaotic opening of the transition period — the 200,000 złoty face value itself reflects the hyperinflationary spiral Poland was navigating in 1990, when the Balcerowicz Plan shock therapy was introduced in January, virtually overnight liberalizing prices and demolishing the old monetary scale. Within two years, denominations like this would be rendered absurd by redenomination planning.

Kościuszko was a deliberate choice for this moment. His 1794 insurrection against the partitioning powers carried obvious resonance for a nation reasserting independence after decades of Soviet-era constraint.
