Reverse description The reverse presents a facing bust of King Sigismund I the Old (Zygmunt I Stary), depicted in royal attire with a crown, fur-trimmed mantle, and an ornate cross pendant suspended at his chest. The effigy is rendered in high relief with detailed sculptural modelling. Flanking the bust at left and right are laurel branches, with the regnal dates 1506 and 1548 inscribed at either side above the shoulders. The name ZYGMUNT I STARY is boldly lettered in the lower portion of the field, and the word PRÓBA (trial) appears discreetly within the design, identifying this piece as a pattern strike.

Additional information

Trial strikes from the NBP's early 1990s commemorative program were produced in alternative metals to test die quality and striking pressure before authorizing final production runs — nickel blanks used here in place of the gold or silver intended for circulation issues. Most were retained internally or distributed to a small circle of officials and approved collectors, meaning survivorship outside institutional holdings is genuinely low. Sigismund I ruled Poland-Lithuania from 1506 to 1548, overseeing the minting reforms that introduced the Polish grosz system to greater standardization.
