Reverse description The reverse presents a three-quarter facing portrait bust of Pope John Paul II in papal vestments and skullcap, positioned to the left of the field. To the right of the pontiff's effigy appears a relief depiction of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa (Our Lady of Częstochowa) with the Christ Child, rendered in a stylised icon format. The legend JAN PAWEŁ II arcs across the upper field, and the word PRÓBA, denoting trial or pattern status, is inscribed to the left of the papal portrait. The composition is framed by a plain raised rim.

Additional information

Trial strikes — próby — occupy a peculiar position in Polish numismatics: legally produced by the Mennica Państwowa but never authorized for general release, they exist in tiny quantities and were historically distributed through channels that combined official allocation with considerable opacity. This 1991 issue commemorates John Paul II during a period when the National Bank was aggressively expanding its collector program following the political transformations of 1989 — papal subjects being both commercially viable abroad and politically unambiguous at home.

The Fischer and ParM references confirm próba status. Surviving population is extremely low.
