| Additional information |
Issued to commemorate John Paul II's third pastoral visit to Poland in June 1987, this piece was produced under the Communist government of Wojciech Jaruzelski — a political situation that made any official acknowledgment of the Pope's influence deeply uncomfortable for the regime, yet economically impossible to ignore. Hard currency was desperately needed, and gold commemoratives sold abroad were one of the few reliable sources.
At 373 grams, it is among the heaviest gold coins ever produced by Mennica Polska.
