Issued in the final stretch of Ukraine's karbovanets period, this coin appeared roughly two years before the currency was replaced by the hryvnia in September 1996 — a transition that wiped out the karbovanets entirely, rendering the denomination obsolete almost immediately after minting. The 200,000 karbovanets face value reflects the cumulative inflation Ukraine suffered following independence, when consumer prices rose by several thousand percent between 1991 and 1994.
Odesa received the Soviet "Hero City" designation in 1965, marking its 73-day defense against Romanian and German forces in 1941.
