Additional information

Ukraine joined the United Nations as a founding member in 1945 — not as an independent state, but as a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, a political concession extracted by Stalin at Yalta to increase Soviet bloc voting weight in the new body. The anomaly meant Ukraine held a UN seat for nearly five decades before it actually governed itself. This coin, issued just four years after independence, marks that complicated anniversary.
