Mönchengladbach issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflationary collapse of 1923, when the Reichsmark was depreciating so rapidly that municipal and commercial bodies across Germany were forced to print their own denominations to keep local commerce functioning. By the time notes of this magnitude were entering circulation, the August–November 1923 period had pushed denominations into the billions and trillions within weeks.
A 200-million-Mark note would have been unremarkable in purchasing power by late autumn 1923 — roughly sufficient for a loaf of bread, briefly.
