Poland's nature-themed commemorative silver series launched in the 1990s as the NBP sought to build a collector base during the post-communist economic transition — these issues were sold directly at face value through bank branches, which kept mintages modest and secondary market premiums relatively stable. The European pond turtle, once widespread across Polish lowland river systems, had declined sharply enough by the early 2000s that it carried protected status under Polish law and was listed on the Bern Convention's strictly protected fauna annex.
The 2002 issue had a mintage of 25,000 pieces.
