| Obverse description | Predominantly ochre and brown on a guilloche underprint, with the intaglio portrait of Józef Piłsudski in military uniform at right, his name inscribed vertically along the right margin. At centre, the Polish state coat of arms — a crowned white eagle — rendered within an elaborate shield vignette. Upper left bears a holographic foil element incorporating the numeral '20' and a laurel branch in blue and green iridescent tones; below it, a colour-shifting window with a vignette of the NBP headquarters building. The date 'WARSZAWA, 16 STYCZNIA 2014 r.' is inscribed centrally, with two signature lines for the President and Chief Treasurer of Narodowy Bank Polski below the coat of arms. |

Released to mark the centenary of the formation of the Polish Legions under Józef Piłsudski in August 1914, this is one of a series of polymer commemoratives issued by NBP that circulate at face value but are clearly aimed at collectors. The note was printed by De La Rue on GUARDIAN polymer substrate — relatively early adoption for a Polish commemorative, the NBP having issued its first polymer note only a few years prior.
The transparent window incorporated into the polymer substrate carries optically variable elements that interact with the holographic foil strip in a way that rewards close inspection. Polymer notes of this type rarely show genuine circulation wear; most were purchased directly from NBP branches or the collector distribution channel and went straight into albums.
