Reverse description A detailed depiction of the Church of the Virgin Mary (Kościół Mariacki) in Kraków occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with the characteristic asymmetric twin towers rising prominently above the Gothic nave and surrounding architecture. The word 'PRÓBA' (trial/pattern) appears in small incuse lettering in the lower right field, confirming the piece's status as a trial strike. The circular legend 'CRACOVIA TOTIUS POLONIAE URBS CELEBERRIMA' — meaning 'Kraków, the most celebrated city of all Poland' — runs along the full periphery in raised Latin lettering, interrupted at center top by the church towers.

Additional information

Trial strikes from Mennica Polska in the early 1980s occupy an awkward historical position — produced as the communist government was simultaneously managing a collapsing economy and the rising Solidarity movement. The Mariacki Church series was part of a broader push to issue collector-oriented pieces celebrating Polish cultural monuments, a program that continued even as martial law loomed.

The P321b designation distinguishes this copper-nickel trial from the silver production strikes of the same type. Such pieces were internal proofs of concept, rarely leaving the mint through official channels.
