The Łódź workers' riots of 1980 preceded Solidarność by months — textile workers struck in the spring before the Gdańsk shipyard actions that August made international headlines. This trial strike was produced in anticipation of a commemorative issue that was ultimately not released into circulation, a politically cautious decision entirely characteristic of the late Gierek government's instinct to memorialize labor unrest only once the moment had safely passed.
The nickel trial exists alongside silver versions in the proof series; this base-metal strike was a production test, not intended for collectors.
