Jacek Malczewski (1854–1929) is Poland's foremost Symbolist painter, and this issue belongs to NBP's long-running series honoring Polish artists — one of the more intellectually serious collector programs any central bank has sustained. Malczewski's work drew heavily on Polish Romantic mythology and the trauma of Partition-era national suppression, themes that carried obvious resonance when the series was issued in the early post-communist decades.
The .925 silver standard used here matches the broader NBP collector coin program of the period, which consistently prioritized proof presentation over circulation relevance.
