Poland's centenary of independence in 2018 prompted a small run of commemorative notes, of which this 20 Złotych is among the more restrained — a single denomination rather than a prestige set, printed by PWPW on cotton paper using intaglio engraving by Krystian Michalczuk, whose work on Polish commemorative issues over the past two decades has been consistently sharp. Agnieszka Próchniak handled the overall design.

The note was legal tender from issue, distinguishing it from purely collectible commemoratives that never entered circulation. PWPW has produced its own security paper domestically since the interwar period — one of relatively few national printers in Europe fully vertically integrated in that respect.
