COMECON — the Soviet-bloc economic alliance formally known as the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance — marked its 25th anniversary in 1974, and Poland issued a commemorative series to coincide with it. This piece is a trial strike, produced at Mennica Polska to test die alignment, metal flow, or finish quality before authorizing full production runs. Trial strikes of this type were rarely released through normal channels; most entered collections through mint disposal or official presentation sets.
The Fischer and ParM references both catalog this as a "b" variant, indicating at least two distinct trial versions were produced for this issue.
