Issued to mark the 1050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland — the 966 AD Christianization of the Piast dynasty under Mieszko I, the event that effectively inserted the Polish state into the Latin European world and, arguably, made "Poland" a coherent political concept rather than a collection of tribal territories. PWPW produced this as a commemorative collector note, not for general circulation, using the P#188A designation to distinguish it from the parallel P#188 issue.
Michalczuk handled both design and engraving on the obverse, an unusual degree of control for a single artist on a modern commemorative.
