20 Zlotys Antonina Hoffmann

Antonina Żabińska (born Antonina Erdman, stage name Hoffmann) sheltered hundreds of Jewish refugees inside the Warsaw Zoo during the German occupation, hiding them in animal enclosures and the villa she shared with her husband Jan, the zoo's director. The 2020 issue is part of Poland's long-running series honoring figures central to wartime rescue efforts — a program that has produced some of the Mint of Poland's most technically ambitious collector strikes.

Żabińska died in 1971, largely unknown outside Poland. International recognition came decades later, principally through Diane Ackerman's 2007 book and its 2017 film adaptation.
