Poland produced trial strikes for its 1980 Moscow Olympics commemorative series as internal proofing pieces, struck outside normal production runs to test die alignment and metal flow before authorizing the circulation issue. The nickel composition here distinguishes it from the cupro-nickel standard used in the released coinage — a deliberate substitution common in Polish mint trials of this period to differentiate proofing strikes from saleable product.
Surviving examples are almost exclusively from mint archives or early collector acquisitions; few entered the broader market before the 1990s.
