| Obverse description | The Polish state eagle — an uncrowned, spread-winged raptor facing right with talons displayed — is depicted in high relief at the centre of a recessed circular field, rendered in a stylised socialist-era artistic manner. The bird's wings are spread wide with detailed feather work, and the head is turned to the right. A raised concentric border ring separates the central device from the broad outer legend band, which bears the inscription POLSKA·RZECZPOSPOLITA·LUDOWA ('Polish People's Republic') running clockwise around the full circumference. The date of issue appears at the base of the legend, flanked by raised dots. |

Poland's copper-nickel 20 Złotych issues of the mid-1970s circulated during Edward Gierek's borrowing-fueled economic expansion, when the government was financing industrialization on Western credit. The apparent prosperity masked a debt structure that would collapse spectacularly by 1980, triggering the strikes that gave rise to Solidarność. Coins from this run saw heavy everyday use precisely because the regime kept denominations artificially low relative to creeping inflation.
