Zhang Fei Temple, located at Yunyang on the Yangtze River in Chongqing municipality, was already slated for flooding by the Three Gorges Dam project when this coin was struck. The 1996 issue was part of China's broader program of commemorating sites facing permanent inundation — the temple complex was subsequently dismantled and reconstructed on higher ground between 2002 and 2003, roughly 32 kilometers upstream from its original location.
