China's polymer commemorative notes have followed a consistent pattern since the 2019 Year of the Pig — one note per zodiac cycle, each issued in limited quantities through the People's Bank ahead of the corresponding Lunar New Year. The Snake is the sixth in that run. Polymer substrate was chosen for these issues partly for its durability, but the format also forces restraint on designers: heat-sealed transparent windows and foil elements must be integrated into the layout from the outset, unlike intaglio-heavy circulation paper.
These notes are legal tender but almost never spend. Secondary market premiums typically emerge within days of release.
