Additional information

Issued as part of China's ongoing commemorative program for the Hong Kong handover period, this coin marks the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island — completed in 1993 after thirteen years of construction and, at the time of its unveiling, the tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha in the world. The "New Look of Hong Kong" series was a deliberate political-cultural statement by Beijing, reframing Hong Kong's identity within the broader Chinese national narrative in the years immediately following the 1997 transfer of sovereignty.

The 2-troy-ounce format was standard for this series across multiple subjects.
