To the upper right, the national title 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed in Chinese characters. The year of issue 2000 appears at the lower left, with an additional commemorative inscription in the left field reading 敦煌莫高窟发现一百周年纪念, denoting the centenary of the discovery of the Dunhuang Mogao Caves.
