Galatasaray's 2005 UEFA Cup and Super League double had already faded into memory by the time this piece was struck — it commemorates the club's centenary, founded in 1905 by Ali Sami Yen, a student at Galatasaray High School who modeled the club explicitly on English football associations he had read about rather than observed firsthand. The Turkish mint produced a number of club centenary issues around this period, making this part of a broader commemorative program rather than a standalone commission.
Yeni Lira, introduced January 1, 2005, replaced the old lira at a ratio of 1,000,000:1 — one of the largest redenominations in monetary history.
