The cat faces slightly to the viewer's left, its distinctive heterochromatic eyes rendered with coloured inserts — the left eye in yellow and the right eye in blue — a hallmark trait of the breed. Turkey's "New Lira" redenomination took effect on January 1, 2005, dropping six zeros from the old lira after decades of inflation that had pushed banknote face values into the millions. This coin belongs to the first year of that new currency regime. The Angora — properly the Turkish Angora — is one of the oldest natural cat breeds, originating in the Ankara region, and had nearly vanished by the mid-20th century before a preservation program at Ankara Zoo pulled the breed back from functional extinction.
