Sark's 2012 pattern coinage emerged from a peculiar constitutional moment: the island had only just transitioned from feudal rule to a form of democratic government in 2008, following pressure from the Barclay brothers and a European human rights challenge. The "Xeros Ceros" denomination — a unit with no established exchange rate or legal tender framework — places this firmly in the realm of speculative or promotional issue rather than functional currency.
