North Korea has issued commemorative coinage for export since the 1970s, primarily targeting the Western collector market through intermediaries — the domestic population has no access to hard currency pieces of this kind. The 2010 rabbit series was produced ahead of 2011, the Year of the Rabbit in the sexagenary cycle, a pattern the DPRK mint followed reliably for zodiac issues throughout the 2000s.
At 8.5 grams in aluminium, the physical coin is strikingly light for its diameter — a deliberate choice that keeps production costs negligible on pieces that will never circulate.
