| Obverse description | Central depiction of the Taedong Gate (Taedongmun), a historic East Gate of Pyongyang, rendered in fine detail with its characteristic multi-tiered traditional Korean pavilion roof and stone base surrounded by trees. The circular legend in Korean script arcs around the upper periphery, reading the full name of the issuing authority. The denomination '20 WON' appears in the exergue below the central design, with the overall composition set against a deeply polished field. |

Issued by the DPRK's Central Bank for the collector export market, this piece was never intended for domestic circulation — North Korea's internal economy operated largely outside a functional coin-based retail system by the early 2000s. These brass issues were produced in small quantities and sold through state-controlled foreign currency channels, primarily to dealers in China and Europe.
The Arirang Festival, formalized under Kim Jong-il's direct patronage, became the world's largest choreographed mass performance event by participant count, involving tens of thousands of performers simultaneously.
