The "Thousand-Mile Journey for Learning" commemorates Kim Il-sung's 1925 walk from Pyongyang to Manchuria as a boy of thirteen, undertaken — according to official North Korean historiography — as a pledge to return only after achieving national liberation. The event is foundational to the DPRK's revolutionary mythology and has generated more commemorative output than almost any other episode in the state's ideological calendar.
