The "Thousand-Mile Journey for Learning" commemorates Kim Il-sung's 1925 walk from Pyongyang to Manchuria as a boy of thirteen, undertaken — according to official North Korean historiography — as a pledge to return only after achieving national liberation. The event is foundational to the DPRK's revolutionary mythology and has generated more commemorative output than almost any other episode in the state's ideological calendar. The 95th anniversary falling in 2018 prompted this issue alongside a broader series of commemoratives produced for export through Pyongyang's numismatic trading agencies, as domestic coin collecting has no meaningful civilian market.
