Bizet died in 1875, three months after the premiere of Carmen — never knowing the opera would become one of the most performed in the repertoire. This coin's connection to Vanuatu is purely commercial; the island nation has no historical link to Bizet or French opera, and the Reserve Bank issues such pieces almost exclusively for the numismatic export market rather than domestic circulation.
