| Beschrijving keerzijde | A finely engraved Bennett's Cassowary (Casuarius bennetti) is depicted in right profile, shown in a forward-leaning stance with its head lowered toward the ground, standing amid a tuft of grass rendered in naturalistic detail. The large flightless bird is portrayed with careful attention to its distinctive plumage and powerful legs. The denomination numeral '20' appears to the lower left of the bird, followed by the abbreviation 't' for toea. The design is framed by a dentilated inner border running the full circumference of the coin. |

Papua New Guinea's first national coinage series launched at independence in September 1975, replacing the Australian dollar that had circulated during the Territory period. The Bennett's cassowary was selected not as decorative filler but as a deliberate assertion of endemic identity — this flightless bird exists nowhere else on earth outside of New Guinea and far northeastern Queensland.
The series ran through 1999 with minimal design alteration across a quarter century, an unusual continuity for a newly sovereign nation still defining its institutions.
